What Steps Should I Take To Prepare My Fireplace for Seasonal Use?
- Schedule a Professional Inspection & Sweeping: This is vital, which is why we’re listing it as the first and foremost step. Annual inspections ensure hazards like creosote buildup, blockages, wear and tear, damaged components, crumbling masonry, and more are spotted right away and promptly addressed.
- Do Personal Chimney Checks: Make sure the chimney cap is secure and free of debris. Inspect the chimney crown (the protective top layer around the cap) for cracks, which could lead to leaks and water damage. Open and close the damper to ensure it moves smoothly and creates a tight seal when closed. Be vigilant about looking your system over and noting any issues – and calling for help if problems arise.
- Test Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Make sure the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home are installed near the fireplace, on every level, and outside of bedrooms. Test them to confirm they’re working properly, and replace the batteries (or the units themselves), if needed.
- Examine the Firebox for Damage & Ash Buildup: The firebox, where the fire burns, should be free of cracks and damage. Small cracks can worsen with use, so schedule repairs if needed to prevent heat from escaping into your walls. Also, while leaving a small layer of ash behind can be beneficial during the burn season, make sure to clear out any excess – and clear out everything once your burn season has passed.
- Clear the Surrounding Area & Check Your Clearances: Make sure any surrounding furniture, curtains, or decor are a safe distance from the fireplace area. There should be at least a 3-feet clearance for anything that’s flammable or could easily ignite.
- Ensure Proper Airflow: For wood-burning fireplaces, ensure there’s enough ventilation in the room for the fireplace to draw fresh air. Open a nearby window slightly if your home is tightly sealed to help with airflow and prevent drafts. Or, if repairs or modifications are needed to improve draft and airflow, don’t wait to get this maintenance done.
- Stock Up on Seasoned Firewood: If you’re using a wood-burning fireplace, stockpile dry, seasoned hardwood for the season. Seasoned wood burns more efficiently, produces more heat, and minimizes creosote buildup – and it’s the only fuel you should be throwing into your wood fires.
